The acronym stands for Fermentable, Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, And, Polyols. Fodmaps are carbohydrates found in certain foods. Foods that do not contain carbohydrates are not a concern. This includes meat, poultry, fish, eggs, butter, oils, and hard cheeses. Carbohydrates that are considered fodmaps are fructose, lactose, fructooligosaccharides, galactooliosaccharides, sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, and maltilol.
Fodmaps are poorly digested by the mammalian digestive system. They reach the colon undigested where they are the preferred food for many types of bacteria. This does not present any problem for individuals with a normal microbiome. However, if an individual is prone to dysbiosis (overgrowth of bacteria), fodmaps can exacerbate the dysbiosis. Many diseases are associated with dysbiosis.
A low fodmap diet should be considered for any patient on a hypoallergenic diet that is not doing well. Most patients need to be on a low fodmap diet for a few months and, then, can go back to their previous diet. However, some may have to remain on a low fodmap diet indefinitely.
Low fodmap foods suitable for pets include green beans, potato, sweet potato, pumpkin, carrots, kale, rice, all meats, all fish, spinach, and squash.
