In addition to tests such as complete blood count, serum chemistry panels, and urinalysis, functional medicine employs several other tests that utilize other chemical markers to determine cellular function. These tests provide an assessment of bodily function at the cellular level and enable a rational approach to nutrient supplementation. These chemical markers also permit identification of microbial imbalances in areas of the body that are difficult to access. The ability to assess bodily function at the cellular level permits  diagnosis and treatment of conditions that would otherwise be undefined and not treated- usually to the detriment of the patient.
