Immunosenescence

drdogImmunosenescence refers to the decline in antibody and cell-mediated immune response found in elderly animals- and humans. It is associated with an increased susceptibility to infection, a diminished natural response to tumor and autoimmune disease, and a lowered ability to be successfully vaccinated. Immunosenescence is an issue that should be addressed in all animals as they age.

Fortunately, this is an issue which functional medicine addresses very well.

Proper nutrition, reduction of inflammation, and supplements which maintain immune function make it possible to significantly delay the immunosenscence. It is also possible to restore immune function in many individuals that have suffered immune compromise. Life expectancy has been extended up to 50% in experiments with laboratory animals by using nutritional supplements to maintain immune function.
